Is there a difference in beliefs for american Muslim and middle eastern ones?

do they believe the same way? we always hear the horror story's of honor killings and such, and i have never really sat down and talk to one that was from the middle east, i know a few but just in from the stores i buy thing from, and i did know one american muslim and he was such a sweetie that i could not imagine him to act the way i hear the ones from the middle east do towards their women? i am sorry if i offended any one with this question it was not meant to. i just know that not is all what it seems to be and maybe we only hear the horror and not the good.
