Can you build a immunity over mosquitoes?

I was considering living in Dominican republic i have visited several times and bitten frequently by mosquitoes and come up in itchy lumps but they dont seem to affect locals. would i build immunity over time or would they affect me indefinably some natives said if i drunk Coffee with lemon and salt in the morning i wouldn't be bitten is this true? thanks
